A Charter School grows in West Bend?

First off - sorry about the lack of posts lately. I have been busy with my day job, but things do seem to have been pretty quiet lately.

That said, I have gotten a few emails asking to post about the proposed charter school in West Bend. I must admit I don't know much about the situation. While I digest all the long emails I have gotten and do research into the situation, please feel free to use the comments in this post to discuss the issue.

  1. Attended the meeting last night. I am astounded that we have four board members that are ready to give taxpayer dollars to a private school. Stepanski, Wiegand, Marquardt and koenig. If they push this through a recall is in order. this is fiscal mismanagement at its most basic. Wiegand and Stepanski are knee deep in a conflict of interest.

  2. What is the conflict of interest exactly?

  3. Stepanski and wiegand both have relationships that tie them to the church. Stepanski is a deacon or whatever the baptists call themselves and Wiegand is a member. the conflict comes from the fact that the school is actively recruiting members families to populate the school. They are referencing heavily Statute 118.55 that says children must be allowed to leave school for religious reasons if they desire. Dunford is on the board. The whole school is seperate from the church argument does not pass the smell test. The church will benefit from this in some way.

  4. Dunford is the pastor of the church, not just on the board. He refused to answer questions about the location of the proposed charter school. Weigand refused to answer a question about what cuts he would propose in the budget to fund the charter school. When Kris Beaver asked about "values education" - which has been advertised as one of the benefits of the charter school, none of the four, nor would Dunford, answer the question. It was a very interesting meeting, indeed. If, after digging deeper with the Dept. of Public Instruction, the four amigos continue to push this through, a recall is definitely in order.

  5. Where is Dave Rank to sort all this out for us?

  6. Wouldn't a real journalist in the area be a great thing?

  7. Well, Dave has started the public debate for or against the charter school. This is, I believe, the first thing that will lead to a recall of one if not more current school board members.
